Festival Internacional de Benicàssim has Begun

Blur – The Prodigy – Portishead

Posted: 16th July 2015 09:21

16 – 19 July - Benicassim, Costa Azahar, Spain - Tickets €160

Having been born in 1995 it is perhaps fitting that Benicassim should choose Blur and The Prodigy as two of its headline performers to help celebrate its 20th birthday.

While Benicassim was putting on its inaugural festival, Blur set about defining a generation.  Fresh off the success of seminal album Parklife, the Britpop favourites topped the UK singles chart for the very first time with Country House.  Likewise, few bands outside Oasis and Blur can claim to even have a smidgen of The Prodigy’s success during the 1990s with the pioneers of the big beat genre successfully turning the underground rave scene into a mainstream draw through their iconic punk-infused dance albums Music for the Jilted Generation and The Fat of the Land.

Rather than being a nostalgic throwback, this festival will be a special performance for both bands having recently topped the charts with eagerly awaited new albums.  Blur released The Magic Whip, their first album in 12 years, while The Prodigy rolled back the years with The Day Is My Enemy, their first album in six.  With these two headliners on board, festival goers can expect an epic singalong with Damon Albarn and co before recouping their energy for a 100mph rave with the Firestarter hitmakers the following night.

Benicassim has long been a favourite overseas festival destination for British revellers and 2015 looks set to be no different with a solid British-based line up including Manchester favourites Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Yorkshire rockers Kaiser Chiefs, and Portishead, a band so British it is even named after a town near Bristol.  Further down the bill culture vultures can discover new favourites with the focus on European music.  Highlights include Spanish indie rockers Vetusta Morla and Nunatak, the British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS) Rothera Research Station’s house band of scientists and researchers.
